There is something wondrous about discovering singers who have a unique voice–give me a David Berman or Hayden Thorpe over a thousand Kelly Clarksons any day. Andrew McKee of The Young Friends sounds as though he is trying, with great difficulty, to wrap his mouth around every word which issues from his lips, effectively eating his consonants and howling his vowels. What may not sound pretty on paper is arresting in practice: the sound of a distinctive voice made perfect by its inperfections. Moreover, it’s a perfect match for the ramshackle tunes he writes with friend Brant Stuns (and, yes, the teenagers who met their freshman year of high school are the “young friends” in question).

On May 14th, the band released their premiere EP, Hella, via the Moodgadget label. Its seven songs are brief blusters of jangly guitars borrowed from the Postcard Records and C-86 schools of thought coupled with thin layers of percussion and surprising injections of simple vocal harmonies, as with the third track, “Make Out Point.” The song’s lyrics are an odd assemblage of only three lines which serve more as impressionistic brush strokes than proper narratives, but this too seems well positioned, whether by design or chance. As with peers including Beach Fossils and Surfer Blood, The Young Friends’ music captures an intangible sense of the post-adolescent era. If their songs aren’t quite carefree, the cares on display are of a simpler, more charming magnitude, which–when coupled with the other elements on display–makes for a refreshing treat.

An amazing cd that has such a rich and lovely sound to it, you can’t compare it to other surfer boy bands. While though their songs can be a tad bit confusing in meaning, they are always something you can dance too with your educated friends and also this article is very undermining.

@thatguy: “undermining”? How do you figure? I mean, we featured and wrote about the song because we liked it so much!
