Delaware isn’t exactly a bastion for indie rock heroes, which makes The Spinto Band‘s success over the past few years all the sweeter. Their two LPs, Nice and Nicely Done (2005) and Moonwink (2008), were warmly received by critics and the blogosphere alike because of the band’s inventive songwriting and propulsive rhythms. The Spinto Band recently wrapped up work on their next self-recorded full-length, to be released in 2010 on Park the Van Records, but on October 6th they will release a teaser EP entitled Slim & Slender.
“Jackhammer” is the second track on the EP and is a great entry point for those new to the band. In two and a half minutes flat, the band crafts a song that simultaneously covers a lot of ground while remaining focused on the track’s pulsing, poppy heart. Nick Krill’s vocals and the harmonies boosting them up add a wonderfully psychedelic flourish, evoking the sweet tones propagated by peers such as Grizzly Bear and Of Montreal. During the verses, “Jackhammer” spits out a hiccuping rhythm punctuated by acoustic guitars and the odd drum beat, which serves as a perfect foil to the more sweeping musical gestures provided by the choruses. It also offers a clever parallel to the titular lyrical concern–the inescapable noise of city life, those jackhammers that “never end their work.”
On “Jackhammer,” The Spinto Band soars and skitters as they accomplish more in a couple of minutes than most acts will in half an album.
