SXSW Sampler: Smith Westerns, Blue Aeroplanes SXSW Sampler: Smith Westerns, Blue Aeroplanes

Greetings from Austin, Texas, where the music flows like… well, the complimentary alcohol. Yesterday we bounced around town trying to find some new acts and checking out some old favorites. Here’s a peek at something old and something new from Thursday:

Smith Westerns are a Chicago quartet whose eponymous debut was released in 2009 on HoZac Records. We caught the young band at the NPR day party at The Parish, where they outshone higher billed acts like Local Natives. With their hair in their eyes, the band charged through a fun set that took cues from T. Rex, The Ramones, and The Cribs. It was rock ‘n roll all the way, in the best sense of the term.

I would love to call these Brits legends, but at least in North America they never quite grasped the audience of peers like The Fall and The Go-Betweens. They were one of our must-catch acts this year, putting in a rare Stateside show to an appreciative (and slightly older) small crowd at The Ale House. Watching them live, it’s clear how The Blue Aeroplanes set the template for acts like Art Brut–their slightly-angular guitar riffs and Gerard Langley’s cool, half-sung lyrics are the progenitors of a thousand U.K. acts. Nearly thirty years into their career, the band is making relevant, engaging new music; look for their new LP, Good Luck Signs, to appear later this year.

[…] One of the nice things about Danny’s music industry connections was using them to get into swanky shindigs. Above, Denver electronic music artist Pictureplane DJs a set of great hip-hop at the SESAC brunch party at the Driskill Hotel, where we indulged in mimosas and a hot breakfast buffet. Below are some shots of an NPR day party; the band on stage is the excellent Smith Westerns. […]
