There are a small handful of guitarists who can rightfully claim a throne among indie rock royalty–guys like Frank Black, Lou Barlow, and Stephen Malkmus–and Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis is irrefutably among that number. He doesn’t need a good reason to start a new band, but the story behind his latest, Sweet Apple, is a touching one nonetheless. Referring to the band’s vocalist and guitar player John Petkovic, Mascis says, “I tell people that I saved his life by starting this band, but they don’t believe me.”

The statement shouldn’t be so easily dismissed–Sweet Apple’s origins stem from a dark time in Petkovic’s life following his mother’s death, a protracted battle that left him gaunt, sleepless, chain-smoking, and “totally devastated.” With the help of his friends (Mascis, Witch bassist Dave Sweetapple, and his Cobra Verde bandmate Tim Parnin), Petkovic was able to channel his loss into the new project, writing over two dozen tracks within the band’s first three weeks. The highlights from this artistic purge will be featured on the band’s premiere LP, Love & Desperation, to be released on April 20th by Tee Pee Records.

“I’ve Got A Feeling (That Won’t Change)” is the second cut the band has shared with listeners, a potent two and a half minute anthem which will sound comfortably familiar to fans of Mascis’ old band. Both Petkovic and Mascis are featured vocalists on the song, to which Mascis also lends his signature guitar riffs. If “I’ve Got A Feeling” doesn’t represent a new development on the sonic landscape, it is old-school in the most rewarding way. Sometimes, you just want a thick slab of rock music to sink your teeth into, and Sweet Apple certainly hits the spot.
