As Post Honeymoon, Nick Kraska and Rachel Shindelman make the sort of music married couples shouldn’t be capable of: angry, hard-charging, and tinged with darkness. Instead of serving up wimpy love ballads, the duo gives you the equivalent of watching a well-choreographed fight–and lets be honest, sometimes you need the latter much more than the former.
“Night Guard” grows out of its first movement–which is a flurry of battered drums, gnarled guitar, and barked vocals–into a chorus that is deceptively melodic. As a listener, you can’t help but feel that Post Honeymoon must be one hell of a cathartic release for Nick and Rachel, an ideal outlet for those little frustrations that inevitably accrue in any committed relationship. The last portion of the song deliquesces into a puddle of raw nerves as instruments leave the mix, leaving Shindelman’s ominous refrain of “You hear the night guard coming” hanging in the air.
While “Night Guard” isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, it’s easy to appreciate how appealing their combustible formula is. If you can do what you love, you’re on the right path; but do it with someone you love, and you’re set. Post Honeymoon appear ready to share their passion with the world.
