Over rippling delay effects and Joey Cook’s hushed vocals, Pomegranates embark on a kaleidoscopic voyage on “Corriander,” a track from their recently released sophomore effort, Everybody, Come Outside! The song is understated and even pretty (sorry guys), its passageways winding but not needlessly ornamented. Think of The Decemberists’ style of storytelling but substitute prog-rock and classic rock keyboard breakdowns in place of sea shanties and campfire tales.

On “Corriander,” there is a lot of empty space between the notes; this is an admirable quality here, one that allows the listener the freedom to get lost between melodic shifts. TJ Lipple of the devastatingly underrated Aloha does a superb job getting the mix just right, allowing Isaac Karns’ guitar to shine through the surface, the refracting light of a pool lit from within at night.

With “Corriander” as our guidepost, it seems Pomegranates have the subtle touch that can make believers out of listeners. It’s almost enough to make us root for the Reds.

pretty good song. it has a playful/whimsical tone to it & i can’t help but smile that the title takes me back to an inside joke with a friend making it something more personal. overall: i like it!
