It’s been too long since we last posted, but our holiday hiatus is finally over and One Track Mind is ready to fill your bloated iPods and hard drives with excellent new music in this new decade.
We’re kicking things off with this tune from Monster Movie, the London duo comprised of Sean Hewson and Christian Savill, formerly of seminal shoegazer act Slowdive. The blokes first began their musical collaborations twenty years ago, but it wasn’t until 2000 that they formerly allied themselves under their current sobriquet. Since then, they have released four full-lengths and a couple of EPs, and on April 6th, Monster Movie will release their fifth album, Everyone Is A Ghost, on Graveface Records.
At just under three minutes in length, the album’s fourth track, “Bored Beyond Oblivion,” makes fantastic work of balancing certain shoegazer sensibilities within the more direct framework of the pop song. Sure, its guitars are fuzzy and its vocals may be gilded with a slight ethereal tinge, but Monster Movie has always known better than to try to go for broke recreating Slowdive’s former glories.
Instead, “Bored Beyond Oblivion” strikes these ears as something more in line with the Elephant 6 catalog than an entry from the halcyon days of 4AD. Monster Movie doesn’t attempt to veil their melodies under a deluge of effects pedals; instead, they turn the song’s straightforward thrust into its main selling point. “Bored Beyond Oblivion” is a bit of brilliant, concise songwriting. Catchy and memorable, it leaves the listener wanting to hear more.
