Although she has released two full-lengths on the prestigious Nettwerk label (home to records by Datarock, Josh Rouse, and Ladytron, among others), Jenny Owen Youngs is perhaps most notorious for a cut off her 2007 release, The Take Off All Your Clothes EP. On that single, Youngs laid down a cover of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” the video for which made quite a splash and helped draw attention to the New Jersey singer-songwriter.

“Led to the Sea” is the second track from her sophomore LP, 2009’s Transmitter Failure, and illustrates how Youngs struts along the divide between radio-friendly pop and indie spunk as though it were a catwalk. This song in particular recalls the female fronted mid-’90s acts who deserved the airtime on MTV and alternative radio they received–artists like that dog., Liz Phair, and Juliana Hatfield. Youngs’ hooks are almost too big at times, but she never lets the arc of her composition escape her grasp. The verses are wonderfully subdued, with bass notes hammered out in resonating clarity next to a simple yet propulsive drum beat. These sections act as a foil to the choruses, which chime in with jangly guitar notes and Youngs’ soaring vocals. Dexterously playing the two halves against each other, she creates a song filled with buoyancy and irresistible melodies, reinforcing the perception that Jenny Owen Youngs is still one song away from becoming something of a household name.
