Following in the footsteps of other quirky Canadian acts like The Unicorns and Lovely Feathers, Hot Panda’s “Mindlessnesslessness” strikes a mainline on a mother lode of inner freak. Bombastic vocals courtesy of Chris Connelly splay out over Heath Parsons’s kitschy synths and Maghan Campbell’s stomping beats. But that’s just until the fake-out ending, when the song veers in a completely different direction. In the song’s second half, Hot Panda ramp up the melody, lacing it with harmonic chanting, while the stomping ebbs and the vocals float lightly to the ground.

Hot Panda is having a lot of fun on “Mindlessnesslessness,” but the song never feels devoid of substance or like a vapid joke. Instead, it brings enduring musical moments like The Cramps “Garbage Man” or The Fall’s “How I Wrote Elastic Man” to mind. The quartet, who call the windy wilds of Edmonton, Alberta home, release their second full-length entitled How Come I’m Dead? on October 12, 2010 via Canadian imprint Mint Records.
