On August 4th, Roberto Carlos Lange will be releasing his debut LP under the Helado Negro banner. If Awe Owe is anything like this song, listeners can expect a sonically spacious record filled with tinkering and ideas both fully-formed and nebulous. “Deja” is the product of a musical mind with a lot of ideas to pursue; however, this may be to Lange’s detriment, as the song veers perilously toward a meandering path.
Over the past few years, Lange has worked creatively with a wide array of fellow artists, from kinetic sculptor David Ellis to Guillermo Scott Herren of Prefuse 73. One can hear the spirit of a collaborator on “Deja” in its poetic turns and roundabouts but also in the looseness of its construction. If Helado Negro can somehow strike a balance between those two gravities, the result is poised to be something beautiful, even if this song tends to crumble a bit under its own weight.
