Word on the street is that Headlights‘ third full-length is set to be the band’s most intimate, personal album yet, touching upon the tumultuous period leading up to its recording as well as the void felt by the passing of loved ones. Slated for release by Polyvinyl Records on October 6th, Wildlife finds the band exploring themes and tones they have only alluded to in their previous work. Yet if all you knew of the LP was the first single, “Get Going,” you would be forgiven for placing the band in an altogether different box.
“Get Going” is a conspiracy to extend the summer months into October, a salty breeze extending just past the two and a half minute mark. Chief songwriter Tristan Wraight (who also handles vocal and guitar duties), has a gentle, whispered quality to his voice; even when he is insisting during the song’s chorus “I’ve got to get going,” it comes across as more of a suggestion than an imperative. The guitar parts here are gorgeous and varied. Look left and you’ll find heavily reverbed riffs; look right and there are strong waves of feedback. These different textures recall Yo La Tengo at their poppiest and form a swift current when combined with Brett Sanderson’s driving drumming and the color of Erin Fein’s keyboard work.
At the conclusion of “Get Going,” the takeaway is undoubtedly its rich chorus. If you’re hungry for a hook, Headlights have dished out enough for seconds.

i definitely hear the yo la tango influences, but i would also add summerteeth-era wilco in this song particularly.
