Among the national acts coming through Denver for this year’s Underground Music Showcase is Santa Barbara, California’s Gardens & Villa, who are out touring in support of their just-released self-titled debut on Secretly Canadian.

Like many of their contemporaries, Garden & Villa owe a large debt to the music of the 1980s, especially acts like The Wake whose Factory Records output was characterized by the same gloomy bass tones and aloof synthesizer sighs. In more recent terms, you might say they fall somewhere between Iceage’s unflinching post-punk and the perky synth-pop revivalism of Strange Talk.

“Star Fire Power” is buried three-quarters of the way through Gardens & Villa; it would benefit from being higher up on the track list as it is the kind of tune which reveals more of itself with each listen, its charms growing more pronounced. That may seem a strange diagnosis for a song that unfolds under such a gray cloud but much of “Star Fire Power”‘s drone is only superficial. There are memorable melodic figures scattered throughout and the beginning of the song’s resolution (after the bridge about 3:15 in) has a lovely momentum that carries the track through its conclusion.
