For over thirty years, Britain’s 4AD made its name by scooping up the most talented acts of any given moment, from Cocteau Twins, Throwing Muses, and The Pixies in the ‘80s to current acts such as Gang Gang Dance, the NYC-based quintet behind the stellar “Mindkilla.” After a slew of releases on the über-hip label The Social Registry, Gang Gang Dance recently joined 4AD, and their sound fits right in with other experimental label mates such as tUnE-YarDs, Deerhunter, and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti.

From its inception, “Mindkilla” is a multi-sensorial assault that is ultimately sourced from Lizzi Bougatsos’ singular vocals. While Bougatsos cackles and shrieks, exercising an alarming sonic and emotive range, the song’s catholicity of rhythm carries on as a reminder that you can put your ear to the NYC pavement and hear the whole world pounding away.

Gang Gang Dance captures that beat in “Mindkilla” with an artillery of rhythms that owe as much to the music of meandering gypsies as they do to Throbbing Gristle. Even the synths on the track, which are charged with holding together the song’s melody, are aggressively cacaphonic. As a result of this bounty, “Mindkilla” never sounds sanitized or cold; rather, it’s so full of notes and rhythms that it’s about ready to burst at the seams.

Find “Mind Killa” keeping company with an album’s worth of other fine songs on Eye Contact, which 4AD released on May 10, 2011.
