Experimental iPhone blogging is a first here on OTM–let’s see how it goes!

6:30: Enjoying some free booze at the press HQ, the amazing Double Dutch Salon, with Jess Gronewold of Buzz Zine (left) and Holly Angora Polo of the beloved Donnybrook Writing Academy, where I’m also music editor. We were discussing what shows to see tonight and remarking on the marvelous mason jar light fixture overhead.

7:14: checking out a band called Barbizon (great name) at Three Kings. Their sound is tight, reminiscent of Moving Units and Radio 4–kind of early ’00s but nicely done. Despite what their name suggests, there is apparently some confusion about whether they were dressing down/up for the gig with the keyboardist and vocalist looking freshly styled and the remainder looking as though they just rolled out of bed.

7:29: Caught a couple songs by As Tall As Buildings. I was horrified that I had previously endorsed this band on the site… but then I realized I was confusing them with As Tall As Lions. (Or possibly In Tall Buildings.)

7:42: Everyone I bump into has plans to see Gauntlet Hair (today’s featured band) at 9:00. The Hi-Dive is a relatively small venue; I fear some people are going to be turned away.

7:55: Seven blocks (everyone calls it a hike) north of the main action on Broadway is Moe’s BBQ where Amazing Twin is playing in five. They are tomorrow’s featured band on OTM so look for more details tomorrow and a photo or two shortly. In the meantime, here is how downtown is looking:

8:05: Damn, more people should be watching Amazing Twin, who are living up to half of their name. It doesn’t hurt that everything smells like barbecue, either.

8:25: Killing it. The Denver Post’s John Wenzel hears the influence of “peppy, percussive ’90s indie rock” and I concur. Exceptional rhythms and a huge sound for just four guys.

9:00: Gauntlet Hair, the band everyone seems to want to see, is soundchecking to a crowded venue.

9:23: Holy cow. These guys are easily the best band in Denver (AND they’re a guitarist short tonight). The stage behind the drummer is like a graveyard for broken drumsticks–my man plays with ferocity and a huge grin slapped across his face. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone get as much out of their instrument as their guitarist/vocalist. He’s coaxing walls of rhythm, melody, and noise out of that thing.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have a legacy that is virtually unrivaled in the music world. They have been as prolific as they are influential, with a sprawling catalog that has its roots in seminal albums by The Birthday Party and spans nearly three decades.

Now London-based Mute is doing the good work of re-mastering and re-issuing The Bad Seeds’ entire canon, album by album, in two-disc, collector’s editions. Each deluxe reissue edition contains the re-mastered stereo album, the new surround mix, a specially commissioned short film made by UK artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, plus b-sides from the singles, videos and exclusive sleeve notes.

On May 16th, albums eight through eleven in The Bad Seeds discography — Let Love In (1994), Murder Ballads (1996), The Boatman’s Call (1997) and No More Shall We Part (2001) — saw their expanded re-issue and we’re giving away all four releases to two lucky winners.

OTM is proud to partner with London duo Mighty Mouse to give away three signed copies of their new record!

You may remember the band from their Gorillaz remix we posted last Thanksgiving. Since then, the act has been hard at work on a full band LP scheduled to be released later this year.

In the meantime, the band has been promoting their current effort, the ten track Song With No Word. Designed as a cohesive set of ten “movements,” the album is exploratory and wide-ranging with an improvisational electronic feel.
