Today we begin OTM VS SXSW, two weeks of posts devoted to some of the most interesting artists performing at this year’s SXSW festival. I’ll be down in Austin checking out some of these acts firsthand–look for interview clips and photos in the weeks ahead!

Bergen, Norway may only have a population of just over a quarter of a million residents, but the college town has produced more than it’s fair share of great music over the past few years (check out past featured artists like Datarock and Annie). Continuing this new tradition is Casiokids, whose June 8th American debut, Topp stemning på lokal bar, will be the first pop record sung in Norwegian ever to be released in North America. (Surprising, but true.)

The release will come courtesy of Polyvinyl Records, the label that brought us Of Montreal, Owen, and Aloha, among other great acts. Indeed, it was Of Montreal who “discovered” Casiokids after playing some shows with them and bringing them to Polyvinyl’s attention. Of Montreal provides a nice comparison to part of Casiokids sound, but they share a bit more in common with Hot Chip (with whom the band was also tour buddies).

“Finn Bijkken!” is the fourth of eight tracks on Casiokids’ upcoming release, and while I don’t know what the title means, the music speaks for itself. The song is five minutes of throbbing synthesizers, quirky flourishes, clap-along rhythms, and Ketil Kinden Endresen’s airy, foreign vocals. Rather than stomp out timid electro-pop with predictable beats, Casiokids opt for a more inventive course traveled by acts such as Architecture in Helsinki and The Tough Alliance. “Finn Bijkken!” breathes and burps, never content to simply motor down a mechanized path. Despite a tone which is celebratory above all else, the band works in a couple of more pensive passages to prevent things from ever getting stale. It’s fun without being mindless–both catchy and smart.
